Like-for-like re-roofing, where the same type of tile or slate goes back on the same roof shape, is generally exempt development in Ireland and needs no permission. Changing the material, for example from slate to tile, altering the roof profile or height, or adding roof windows may need permission, particularly on a protected structure or in an architectural conservation area. The exemptions have conditions and councils apply them differently, so check with your local council's planning office before starting, and we can point you to the right person.
